Students in the forest surveying class tested the precision of Garmin 60 GPS receivers today. Nine teams two students recorded 25 sets of coordinates at five different points. Two points were in forested areas and three were in the open. Each team copied their data to a spreadsheet. After the data for each point is combined we will do statistical analysis of the results. More to come.

Henry Sipes Memorial Tree
During a surveying exercise this morning I came across a memorial black walnut tree for F. Henry Sipe (PSFS 25). Sipe became a forester and surveyor in West Virginia. He wrote a book Compass Land Surveying, of which I have the final 1979 edition. It was a detailed handbook for doing forest property surveys. It's definitely a classic! It's great to have these historical reminders around the Mont Alto campus.

Differential Leveling
The purpose of this lab is to use differential leveling to find the difference in elevation from Sci-Tech up to the library. The students are using transit levels and elevation rods. Part of the exercise is making the notes come out right.
