Veterans and 9/11 Memorial Park

In February students from the Forest Management Practices class visited the Veterans and 9/11 Memorial Park at the Letterkenny Chapel to discuss ideas for developing a trail in the wooded area behind the Chapel. In the future forest technology students will volunteer to clean up the vegetation.

We had the opportunity to see the inside of the chapel, which was partially built by Italian POWs in WWII.

Replanting the Watershed

Forest technology students have been busy the past few weeks replanting a thirty acre clearcut on the Waynesboro Watershed with hybrid loblolly trees. The previous stand had became stagnant. Last summer it was harvested. The site was subsequently sprayed with herbicide to kill invasive plants. Now it's ready for replanting! Above is a picture of the freshman silviculture class after a laborious session.

Penn State Mont Alto forestry students are lighting the burn pile on the nursery field. Volunteers will work shifts all weekend to guard the fire. Much of this material came from the ice storm last December that cut power to campus over a whole weekend. Bring on the hot dogs!

Forester Web Sites

In the Forestry Computer Applications course students learn many computer techniques that are needed in forestry such as spreadsheets and document preparation. Communication in the digital requires knowledge of the web. Here are the sites that this fall's students are developing. Remember, they are works in progress.
